Yockanookany WMA Ecology and Wildlife Field Day to be rescheduled due to rainfall, river stage.

Jackson – The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will be rescheduling the Wildlife Management Area Ecology and Wildlife Field Day at Yockanookany WMA near Kosciusko, Mississippi planned for Saturday, September 26, 2009 due to recent rainfall and flood warnings now in effect for the Kosciusko area.

According to the National Weather Service on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009, 3 to 6 inches of rain has fallen northeast of Kosciusko in the last three days.   Responding to the observed rainfall, the Yockanookany River is forecasted by the National Weather Service to rise to near flood stage (15.5ft) by midnight on Wednesday, falling slowly through the rest of the week if no additional rain falls.

Heeding the flood warnings broadcasted by the National Weather Service, MDWFP has decided to reschedule the event in the spring of 2010.  The event is planned to be the first of several events highlighting state Wildlife Management Areas and the management activities that take place each year to make sure these areas benefit both the wildlife and the public that use them.
