Flood of 1927 Exhibit Open at the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery

Jackson - A River Unleashed: The 1927 Mississippi Flood will be on display at the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery Visitor Education Center in Enid from September 1 through October 4.

This flood was one of the most destructive natural disasters in the nation's history. Floodwaters, up to thirty feet deep, inundated over 26,000 square miles of land in seven states, displaced more than 700,000 people and killed hundreds.

Out of this tragedy came the Comprehensive Flood Plan for the lower Mississippi region. Enid Lake is one of the four lakes in North Mississippi constructed as part of that plan.

This special exhibit, produced by the Museum Division of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, contains powerful photographs and maps that illustrate this catastrophe and its long-term effects on Mississippi and the lower river valley.

The North Mississippi Fish Hatchery and Visitor Education Center is part of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. For more information about this special exhibit or for information about the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery call 662-563-8068. Group reservations may be made at http://home.mdwfp.com/NMFH
